Liquid mycelium is the vegetative body of a mushroom (mycelium) placed in a sterile nutrient medium. This format allows for the preservation of a living culture and its transfer to a prepared substrate without the need for complex equipment. It's one of the most convenient methods for cultivating mushrooms at home or on a small scale.
The vial contains 10 ml and is supplied in a Luer Lock syringe, ensuring precise dosing and minimizing the risk of contamination during inoculation.
Compared to spore prints or suspensions, liquid mycelium offers several practical advantages. The culture is already active—the mycelium doesn't need to germinate from spores, reducing the time from inoculation to substrate colonization. Furthermore, the liquid form allows for even distribution of the culture throughout the entire substrate with a single injection.
Another advantage is the ability to inoculate under non-sterile conditions through a rubber inoculation port on the substrate bag. This significantly lowers the entry barrier for beginners and reduces the amount of equipment required.
The inoculation process is simple. A syringe containing liquid mycelium is inserted into a bag containing sterile substrate through a rubber port. The bag is then placed in suitable conditions for mycelial growth—the required temperature and humidity depend on the specific mushroom species.
